Richmond, Va. . . . Breaking a three-year chain of consecutive traffic deaths for 1961 soared to a tentative 852, to compare badly with the 756 of 1960, Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police and Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee announced today.
Explaining the use of the word “tentative,” Colonel Woodson noted that a slight upward revision of all present statistics might be expected due to late reports and deaths of persons now carried as injured, since these deaths revert to the date of injury for statistical purposes.
