Newbill Miller of Washington was unanimously elected chairman of the Rappahnnock County Board of Supervisors at their February meeting on the 6th. Mr. Miller was appointed to the Board to fill the unexpired term of E. M. Jones who resigned to become Clerk of the Court of the county. The motion was made by E. M. Estes. Herbert Foster presided at the meeting in the absence of the vice chairman, H. B. Wood.
Judge R. V. Snead appeared before the Board and discussed the need of physical improvement of the Clerk’s office, the need of additional help to bring the Clerk’s records up to date and the needs of the sheriff to insure efficient operation of the jail.
Sheep and fowl claims were presented by Dog Warden Jack Bruce and were approved.
0. A. Norton, Superintendent of Schools, reported that progress had been made on the improvement of the entrance to Sperryville Elementary School. The Board discussed with Mr. Norton the effect the proposed Town of Washington ordinance would have on the operation of the schools and the retiring of the debt.
T. C. I.ea, Jr., tendered his resignation as Civil Defense Co-ordinator and it was accepted.
A letter from Capn. J. P. Cook of Flint Hill was read requesting the appropriation of $200 for work on the entrance to the Flint Hill Cemetery. This was rejected by the Board.
A Budget Committee was named to prepare a tentative budget for 1963-64 fiscal year. J. Newbill Miller was named chairman of this committee and others are Robert L. Brown, E. M. Jones, G. H. Davis, Jr., Mrs.
4 Roberta Spalding, Mrs. W. A. * Buntin, W. C. Campbell, 0. A. Norton and B. B. Mitchell. E. ‘ gl. Jones was instructed to prepare budget with assistance of the State Auditors Office and present same to budget committee.
The Clerk and Chairman were authorized to sell surplus office furniture in the Clerk’s Office after advertising same. $2000 was allotted for new furniture. fixtures and needed changes for this office.
