To insure high fertility in hatching eggs, he says, keep the flock free from extreme temperature stresses. Once the eggs are laid they should be stored with care, and set at least twice 'a week if economically feasible. If eggs are held more than a week, they should be allowed longer than the normal hatching time for the maximum hatch. These conclusions are drawn from research at various institutions. 16th Annual Wildlife Essay Contest sponsored by the Virginia Came Commission and the Virginia Izaak Walton League ended January 15 with a new record total of 13,684 entries from school children in grades five through twelve. One hundred eighty three schools presented essays. Students are competing for $3,000 prizes, the biggest of which is an $800 scholarship.
