Mrs. Mary yuaintance stated that in her opinion it would not be fair for the town not to pay its share and said it would create a strong feeling of dissatisfaction among the patrons.
Mayor Davis asked for opinions of members of the town who were present. As there were none forthcoming she spoke as follows:
First she made it clear that she and all members of the i council w e r e . n -ajjatnst1 schools, had always been a loyal supporter, and would always continue to cooperate. They had not intended to cause so much dissension; however, the fact remains that the town needs money and the council had gone over all possibilities. At one time tyhere was a town tag, suspended during the war. They agreed it would be fair to have a lesser price, so $10.00 was agreed upon. She also cited facts and figures showing that town residents paid higher taxes, through assessment, although other figures show that the county residents were the real "money people”.
She also cited that being an incorporated town, they did have the authority to levy a tax. The county had enjoyed the privilege of exercising the right to levy the license tax in the town and as long as the town did not need it, were willing for it to be put to such good use.
