Exceed Last Year’s
Statistics released today by Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police and Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, showed a slight rise in the traffic deaths of January, 1963, as compared to those of January, 1962. Last year, there were 63 January deaths, of which 15 were pedestrain. This January, deaths reached 64, of which 15 were also pedestrian. Thus* Colonel Woodson noted, there appears to be a worsening of the situation, despite the public concern that has been generated by the sharp rises in fatalities during 1961 and 1962. “Icy roads,” he said,' “were directly responsible for at least 10 of this year's January deaths. However, dangerous weather conditions always are present during January, so we can establish no definite pattern.”
At the same time, Colonel Woodson reported that a death occuring from an injury received last December 'sent the 1962 toll to 973, 'which remains the third 'highest in Virginia traffic history. He added that the January, 1963 score could run even higher with late report a n d s u b s e q u e n t deaths.
“It is yet too early to make any predictions as to the entire year, but the beginning is disturbing,” he concluded. 1 to 4 days, and then about a 1 percent decline for each 'day thereafter. As eggs are ’held for longer periods, this decline in hatchability increases more rapidly. It is •’important for eggs to be set twice a week to increase the hatch. i Work at VPI shows that ,«ggs from 22 ounces to 28 Jounces hatefe between 36 and 92 percent; 18 ounce and 30 ounce eggs hatch 69 and 78 percent respectively. This information indicates that average sized eggs tend to hatch better than the smaller or larger ones.
It has been shown that if eggs stored beyond 4 days are given an increase in incubating time, better hatches can be had from stored eggs.
