New York — A Beat belt costs less than one day in the hospital, yet the average unbelted autocrash victim will spend more than two weeks in a hospital bed, reports the American Seat Belt Council. The Council notes that medical expenses involved in auto collisions during 1961 averaged more than $330 per person; seat .belts range from $4.95 to $12.95.

Reports Big Gain

Southern States Cooperative’s net savings for members were up sharply during the first six months of the 1962-63 fiscal year, according to a report presented by Jas. R. Ayers, Jr. of Richmond, to members at a regional board meeting held in Culpeper on Tuesday. These sessions—there are 48 of them held annually in a five state area—are held to give local community advisory boards, directors, stockholder committees, guest young farmers and agricultural workers the opportunity to hear a report on the cooperative’s operations during the first half of the fiscal year. The members also discuss problems and policies of the cooperative as they affect the more than 350,000 individual members of the organization. Mr. Ayers told 39 Southern States members and guest young farmers at the session that even through overall volume was down, increased operating economy gave the cooperative net savings of $730,000 for the first half of the 1962-63 fiscal year. This compares with a net loss of $509,000 in the first six months of the previous fiscal year. Total overall volume for Southern States, exclusive of local farm supply and petroleum cooperatives, for the period stood at $57.7 million. In pointing out the extremely sound financial condition of the cooperative, Mr. Ayers told members that the organization has about $7.00 of current assets for each $1 of current debt.
