The National Geographic Society, founded in January, 1888, featured a detailed biography of the storm in the first issue of its magazine, published in October of the same year. The blizzard, a Navy scientist explained in the Geographic, resulted from the cataclysmic meeting of two i storms. One was a great arched line of cold winds and snow stretchingfrom the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. It swept eastward 600 miles a day. The other carried warm rain and winds north from Georgia along the Atlantic coast. The two weather juggernauts collided head-on early on Monday, March 12, 1888. High pressure over Newfoundland kept the storm from surging out to sea. The blizzard seemed to concentrate its fury on New York City. Show bfegan sifting down Sunday night. By Monday morning, drifts were knee-high. Before noon, every horsecar, cable car, and elevated train had stopped running. Firemen raised ladders to rescue passengers from elevated trains. Streets were perilous. Wind ripped off signs and rocketed them about. Stone cornices toppled. Loose ends of broken telephone and telegraph wires whipped through the air. Ice and snow from 2 to 15 feet deep chocked Broadway and other main thoroughfares. Department stores had hopefully designated Monday as Spring Opening Day; a handful of customers appeared. Clerks, stranded in the stores at day's end, spent the night on mattressesunder the watchful eyes of chaperones.
