If an English ship had not gone aground in the Potomac River in the 1650’s. Serving as mate on the ship, reports World Book Encyclopedia, was John Washington, great-grandfather of George. By the •time the ship was repaired, he had decided to marry and settle in Virginia. Washington had little money when he arrived in America. But within 20 years he owned more than 5,000 acres of land, including the land that later became Mount Vernon.
