The Virginia Division of Forestry reports that many people still do not clearly understand the requirements of the 4 p.m. brush burning law and the reasoning behind the law. * For this reason. Chief Forest Warden R. M. Johnson has attempted to clairfy the reasoning behind this law. From March 1st to May 15th it makes any burning of brush grass or debris illegal when located within 300 feet of any woodland or within 300 feet of dry broom sedge or other inflammable material which leads to the woods except between the hours of 4 p.m. and 12 o'clock midnight. The following questions are frequently asked concerning this law: Question: Why is burning prohibited before 4 p.m. during this period?
