Bull Feeding Test and Sale at Culpeper
Thirty-eight Virginia cattlemen who are members of Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association participated in the 1962-63 winter bull feeding test and sale at Culpeper. On October 1,1962,90 bulls were delivered to the test station at the Culpeper Agricultural Enterprises. There were 43 Hereford, 43 Angus and 4 Shorthorns. These bulls were started on the official 140 day test one week later on October 8. The bulls were fed out in targe lots with no shelter. They were full-fed a growing ration consisting on the ton-basis of 1100 # crushed ear corn, 200 # soybean oil meal, 100 # linseed oil meal, 250 # of # 3 alfalfa hay, 250 # mixed hay, and 100 # molasses, plus 2,000,000 units of vitamin A per ton. The total ration was coarsely ground. The bulls were weighed every 28 days and were officially weighed and graded off test on February 25, 1963. A few bulls were removed from the test for various reasons and two bulls died during the course of the test.
