Interest To Veterans
There were 4,579 deaths in the United States military services in the past year, with accidents taking the greatest toll. Records made public recently show that of the total deaths, 1,226 were attributed to “natural causes". Except for a com-, parative few, the remainder died from accidents. There were 31 killed in hostile action - a reference to the Viet Nam War in which U. S. personnel died in planes, helicopters and while Accompanying South Viet Nam forces on grpund patrols against the Communist Viet Cong. Included in the other than accident category are suicides, the number of which was not released. The total of Army deaths was 1,740. The Navy’s total was 1,132 with 234 natural cause deaths. The accidental deaths included the 129 who went down aboard the atomic submarine Thresher in Aprp.
