Several traffic accidents have been reported in the past ten days on Rappahannock highways.
William Moore Garden of Suitland, Md. driving a 1962 Mercury sedan failed to make a curve on Route 211 four miles east of Washington and over turned down an embankment on Monday, July 29. According to Troop er Paul Dicks, Mr. Garden ran off the left side of the road down an embankment, turning completely over and coming to rest upright. The vehicle was a total loss.
Mr. Garden sustained multiple lacerations of the head and was still hospitalized Tuesday in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal His wife, Mrs. Jesse Garden, a passenger received multiple contusions over her entire body and was also still a hospital patient Tuesday. Flint Hill Rescue Squad answered the alarm and transported the victims to Front Royal. Trooper Dicks reported a hit and run accident on Friday, August 2 on Route 211, 4.8 miles east of Washington. Walter Cline Guthrie Jr. of Roanoke, operating a '63 Buick sedan, was forced off the road by Joe Allen Sherrill of Baltimore, Md. when Sherrill passed the Guthrie car and cut in tob closely, striking the left front of the Buick. Sherrill failed to stop astheGurthrie vehicle ran down the bank. Mrs. Guthrie and daughter were also in the car, but there were no injuries and damage was slight. Trooper Dicks was patrolling in Sperryville when he received the message from the Culpeper dispatcher, in forming him of the hit and run accident, but no description was available. Mr. Dicks stopped the Sherrill vehicle, a ’56 Olds, near Sperryville after he met it driving over the center of the road and discovered crash marks on it. The Guthries identified it and Sherrill was charged with hit and run. Julian Livi Richards of Luray was operating a '52 CMC truck on Route 211 six miles west of Sperryville when mechanical difficulties resulted in brake failure and the truck ran over the bank and into the ditch. The truck was owned by Moyer Bros, of Luray and was loaded
