the movement of any Virginia swine into adjoining States. Such action would work a hardship upon those who are doing a good job of cooking as well as those who are in violation. The movement of raw-garbage-fed swine across state lines may result in prosecution under Federal law. Producers who have not fed raw garbage, but who market raw garbage-fed swine for others will not only share the legal responsibility of such acts, but may lose the approved status of their own herd as well through willful exposure. Your very special attention and consideration is called to the fact that Virginia law requires that garbage which is to be fed to swine must first be cooked at the boiling point for at least thirty minutes. Virginia law also requires that persons feeding garbage to swine must purchase a garbage feeding permit. Our concern is for the health and welfare of the nation’s livestock; our objective, the control and eradication of disease. We need your help. If you have any questions, contact the Virginia State Veterinarian’s office. The Richmond Animal Disease Eradication Office, or the inspector for your area, (B. J. Wood) who will be visiting your farm from time to time to check your operations.”
********** Much of our corn will not make grain as result of the drought. Maximum feed value can be obtained by ensiling what growth there is. No doubt much of this corn will be ready to ensile earlier than usual. Don’t get caught with your pants down. If you don’t have a trench, bunker, or upright silo, making a silage stack is a quick, cheap, and easy way to save the feed. Even those who do have permanent type silos may have extra silage which can De stored in a stack. Details are available through your county agent’s office.
