Forest Fire Towers

J. V. Jackson, District Fire Chief for the Virginia Division of Forestry's Northern Piedmont District, reports that, due to the dry conditions, all forest fire lookout towers in the district are in full operation. The number of forest fires has been on the increase during the past two weeks. None of the fires thus far have been large, but the potential for a large fire is present and will remain until the drought is broken. Autumn is normally a season during which forest fire danger is high. This is attributed to the annual leaf fall which puts fresh fuel on the ground in the forest.
