Slaughter Cattle
The moderate seasonal increase in cattle prices usually experienced from the middle of October to the end of the year is not expected this year. Cattle on grain feed for slaughter market in 28 major states, as of October 1 report totaled 6 million, 739 thousand This is a 10 per cent increase over a year earlier. It is also significant that cattle weighing over 900 pounds counted for 4/5 of thi6 increase. The number of cattle in the 900 pounds and up weight group is 25 per cent above last year. Total slaughter in September was up about 6 per cent above the same month last year. So far in October, slaughter increase has been 10 per cent above last year. In addition, heavy competition from other meats is expected. Good grade steers at Virginia auctions last week brought $20.00 to $23.00. Good heifers brought $18.00-$20.25. In Chicago last week, choice grade steers weighing 900 to 1300 pounds brought $23.50$24.25. Good gradesteers brought $22.00-$23.25. Choice grade heifers sold at $22.25$23.25 and good grade heifers brought $21.25-$22.25.
