Sod Planting - No Tillage
Corn may be produced without tillage with excellent results. The advisability of this method on a given farm depends on the following factors:
1. A good sod cover is necessary to provide a good mulch 2. Sod should be sprayed with a herbicide 4 to 6 weeks before planting time. This reduces the competition for plant food and moisture at planting time. Five lbs. 80W atrazine (4 lbs. active ingredient) has been adequate to get effective control with most grass sods. 2.4 D has been used on susceptible species. Research is continuing its efforts to tfind an effective and more economical herbicide. 3. Satisfactory mechanical planting with the seed firmed in the soil and covered at a uniform depth is important. No tillage offers definite advantages in preventing erosion where corn is grown on slopes. It gives comparable, and in mahy cases, greater yield with proper management than conventionally grown corn. Some of the disadvantages of no-tillage practices are: 1. The lack of chemicals to effectively control certain undesirable vegetation. 2. The use of high rates of presently available herbicides may result in undesirable residual effects on following crops, especially fall seeding of small grain. 3. High costs of herbicides. Most of the no-tillage corn has been planted with modified conventional planters. Many farmers have used additional attachments for opening and closing the furrow, and especially, weighted press wheels for firming the soil around the seed to prevent air voids.
