Farmers have been asking about Guthion for Alfalfa Weevil control. Some used this chemtcal'Hast year. Apparently were expecting it to be on die recommended list this year since it has Federal label approval and has been given the okay by a couple of our neighboring states, “According to Jack Rowell, Extension Entomologist: Guthion has not “measured up" in Dr. Bishop’s research on the control of the Alfalfa weevil." It is a very toxic insecticide and carries a 21 day waiting period between application and harvest. This is a limiting factor as it is more difficult to judge or estimate maturity, or readiness of Alfalfa for harvest, three weeks ahead since the process is influenced so much by growing conditions. The two chemicals recommended: Malathion "and Diazinon have a seven (7) and ten (10) day respective waiting period. A supply of “MS-105, Control the Alfalfa Weevil* which gives details on use of these materials have* been ordered and will be sent all knwon Alfalfa growers.
