Washington, Va... Rep. John 0. Marsh, Jr., said here tonight there was “an urgent need for public disclosure of international and domestic meat-marketing practices.* “The combination of severely-depressed beef cattle prices and maintenance of relatively high consumer prices on beef indicate that there are factors in operation concerning which not enough is known for an informed judgement to be made as to proper correctional action,* the 7th District Congressman commented^ Marsh spoke at a meeting of the Rappahannock Angus Feeder Calf Association. “If, as has been indicated, we have had excessive imports combining with high domestic production and premature marketing on account of drought conditions, depressed on-the-hoof domestic prices should have resulted in reduced prices charged the ultimate comsumer for beef products, but this has not been the case,* he said.

“For reasons which are not fully apparent, we have not been getting a normal freemarket response, and this is a situation which requires examination, in the interest of our important beef-cattle industry and the consumer," Marsh said.
