Pine Seedlings

Eight million loblolly pine seedlings are still available from • the state forest tree nurseries for planting this spring in reforestation projects. William C. Vernam, Forester for Rappahannock County, reports that these trees are still dormant in the nursery beds, thanks to cold nights, which means that spring planting season can be extended for about two weeks longer than usual. With proper care in shipping, these trees should be suitable for successful planting throughout April. Loblolly pine is suitable for planting on many sites in the east and southern portions of ihe county and even the northpart of the county has some places where this specie of southern pine does well. Loblolly pine is a rapid grower on suitable sites with plantations yielding both pulpwood and sawtimber. Seedlings cost $5.50 a thousand trees delivered to the landowner or planting site. Roughly 800 trees will plant an acre of open land with a fewer number of trees being needed to reforest cutover land. Landowners who wish to order trees for planting in April or who wish to have a free planting site examination with recommendations for tree planting should contact Mr. William C.
