set of one 3x4 negatives; one sepia and one positive print can be obtained @ $8.00 per set as compared to $45.00 per set paid by a Northern Virginia County. With 87 soli maps the total costs to this county could be $696.00. Other counties having made similar Investment according to Mr. Porterj, have more than recovered their initial Investment. Once a complete set of sepia is made available, additional copies of positive film can be had at no cost to the county. Through sales of films @ say a buck each, the county recovers its initial investment. Elsewhere films have proven to be in popular demand among farmers, developers, governing bodies, real estate brokers and agric-businesses. Useage is in developing sound engineering and crop production plans. Some examples would be in locating surfaced drives, pond sites, home and other building sites. Also, in locating best suited areas for production of alfalfa, corn, and other crops, etc. etc. One needs but look around them in most any part of the county to see road surface upheavels, leaky basements, septic tank disposal fields that don’t function, etc., all because soil type suitability was not investigated prior to making the Installation. In like manner complete crop failures, or unproductive crops can be observed because soil suitability was not determined prior to setting the orchard or planting the field crop. The soil survey shows both types of information (engineer. ,ing and production potential). Areas on the soil suitability maps are rated Good, Fair, Poor, etc. each expressed in color. Mr. Porter is scheduled to meet with the Board and Commission during the first week in May to give detailed explanation of why and how different soil types are classified as regards suitability. At this time the Board will decide whether or not to invest in a complete set of negatives, sepia and positive prints.
