Fall Foliage Color
Picture Unchanged
The fall color picture in Shenandoah National Park has not changed to any great degree during the past week, according to a report received today from Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins. Hoskins said that cool, rainy weather has served to retard some color that may have been anticipated; however, frost was predicted in the mountain areas, and this would tend to speed up the annual transformation.
As in past years, the dogwood and Virginia creeper already have taken on their red hues, but for the most part there are only a few mixed patches of color that have been observed - mainly on the mountain peaks, including the yellows of the tulip poplar, birch, ash, maple, locust, and hickory and the reds of some of the black gum and maple.
