Soil Samples

About 84,000 samples were :ested last year in the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service’s soil testing laboratory at Virginia Tech, says George W. Hawkins, associate Extension agronomist at the university. The county which sent in the most samples was Southampton — with 4,050. Nansemond County sent in 3,098 samples and Washington County sent In 3,062. Since 1938, farmers and homeowners in the Old Dominion have been depending on the lab to tell them what's wrong with their soils. Persons wanting their soils tested request boxes and record sheets with instructions from their county Extension agricultural agents. They then take samples from their land as directed, place them in the boxes and return the boxes to the Extension agents. The Extension agents mail the samples into thtfsotl tftSting'lJrb^ oratory. After the tests have been completed, the record sheets containing results are mailed back to the Extension agents, who then make recommendations to the persons who submitted the samples.
