Va. Dept, of Agric.

Name Changed

Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr., made it official in a recent proclamation in which he certified that the name of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Immigration was now changed to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce. The name change was approved in a state-wide referendum on November 8, but complete results of the balloting could not be determined until the State Board of Elections tabulated and certified the results to the Governor. Upon receiv ing results of the official canvass, Governor Godwin then proclaimed that the referendum had passed by 388,009 to 118,484 votes and that the name of the agency was now the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce. The state-wide referendum was necessary to change VDA’s name because the State Constitution, which carried the department’s old name, had to be amended. Since a change in the State Constitution was involved in up-dating VDA’s name, the procedure was long and complex.
