Realizing that Immigration as a part of the department's name was a complete misnoner and no longer applicable to any present day functions of VDA, the State Board of Agriculture in 1963 passed a resolution asking the General Assembly to change the department’s name. Approval was necessary from two regular sessions of the legislature, and this was granted at both the 1964 and 1966 sessions. This action paved the way for the final public approw al at the November 8 referendum.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce now believes it has a name befitting its present role in a modern and changing statea name that will show better the functions of the department, plus the relationship of agriculture and commerce to our total economy.
