Met Last Week
A meeting of the Rappahannock Historical Society was held Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the Court House with a small but enthusiastic group of members present. The President, Mr. E. M. Jones, presided.
Dr. William Wake reported for the Cemeteries Committee. Over 100 questionnaires asking for reports on local cemeteries has been sent out. Some good reports have been received, especially for Jackson and Wakefield Districts. It is expected that more reports will be completed when the weather improves.
Much interest was shown in a repeat field trip to cemeteries and a tentative date of April 16 was set. It was decided to meet at the Court House at 1:30 p. m. on that date as a starting point. By-laws were discussed and accepted. The date for the annual meeting of the Society was changed from the former date of Feb. 8, birthday of Rappahannock County, to the first Tuesday In May of each year. This is to avoid possible inclement weather which cuts down attendance.
Mr. R. L. Brown and Mr. Jones reported that interesting documents had been located such as the first personal property book of the county and the report of the Commissioners on the proposed locations of the first public buildings of the county. Steps will be taken to preserve these documents.
Mr. Robenrt Johnson was appointed Chairman of the nominating committee to choose new officers for the Society.
