Stuart Wells Named
Stuart W. Wells, Jr. of Way zata, Minn., merchandising wizard for the Dayton Co., has been named president of the department store operations. He is the first nonfamily-member to head the 65-year-old department store organization which has a chain of five stores in the midwest.
Wells, 57, joined the Daytons in 1938 as a buyer in ltB fashion Model Room which he Vater retitled the Oval Room. He sparked the company’s first venture into national advertising in fashion magazines after World War II.
By 1954, Wells was vice president for apparel and 10 years later was vice prest dent for publicity. He was the innovator in the department stores' attention-getting changes in merchandising which reflected the expansion from a midwest family-owned business to a natonal-growth oriented company. Mr. and Mrs. Wells visited in Rappahannock County for many years during the fox bunting season prior to purchasing property and building a country home near Five Forks. He has fully recovered after undergoing heart surgery last December.
