emulsifiable concentrate was painted by mistake on the backs of several registered Hereford bulls and cows to control flies. Three bulls and two cows died. The concentrate was properly labeled and the accident was a result of carelessness. “Studies have shown that the list of common chemicals and drugs accidentally ingested in sufficient amounts to cause severe illness or death in young children, was headed by aspirin (about 50 percent) bleaches (5.4 percent), kero sene (4.8 percent), laxatives (2.^ percent) and drain clean ers (2.d percent). Soaps, clean ers, furniture polish, vita mins, and disinfectants all claim their share," says Gruenhagen. Such tragedies need not have occurred, he emphasizes, if proper precautions areobserw ed. “Before you use them, always carefully read the labels on all chemicals, drugs and pesticides," he warns. “Then follow the direction for proper use. storage and disposal."
