County finances comprised a large part of the business of the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors at the May meeting held Friday.* The grand total of the proposed budget for 1967-68 which was submitted by the budget committee totaled $674,743. This is an increase of $98,657 over the previous year. The proposed budget was carefully examined and minor revisions made. The budget will be published and a public hearing held at the June Board Meeting before it can be officially adopted.

As is usual, the greatest expenditure is for feducation, and school funds to be administered total $483,370. The increase over the 66-67 year is $79,440. A breakdown of school funds shows $307,450 going for instruction; $11,250 for the School Board and Super intendent's office; $670 for coordinate activities; $63,625 for auxiliary agencies; housing will take $32,610 and fixed charges amount to $4,810. (stand at $28,155 and $34,800, respectively, both sub| stantially increased. Public assistance is the second largest category with a total of $104,140 to be dis-j bursed. Of this amount public assistance takes $85,260 and^ $18,880 is used for administrative purposes. Financ-! ing is done with state, federal and county funds. State and federal supplements total) $80,260 and the county sharel is $23,471. Salaries for county officers, courts, prisioners, accessory medical examiner, fire prevention, zoning and planning ; commissions, public health, maintenance of buildings and grounds, are among the numerous other expenditures (which take the remaining ! $87,233. ! Sources of revenue for financing the $674,743 budget in addition to state and federal supplements which amount to $283,756, are motor vehicle license tax of $19,000; utility tax $10,080; county sales tax $18,000; share state sales tax $54,000; delinquent taxes and land redemption $5,400; current levy $221,298; and surplus of $53,649. The allotment for protection of livestock and fowls is $3,400 which is financed by the sale of dog tags. The current levy on real estate and personal property will remain at $3.80 per $ 100 valuation.
