Hearing Scheduled
On Wilderness Areas
■ Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins of Shenandoah National Park has announced that the National Park Service has scheduled a public hearing to receive comments and suggestions on a proposal to establish six wilderness areas comprising 61,940 acres in the Park. The hearing will be held at 9:00 a.m., June 14, in the Luray High School auditorium, 14 Luray Avenue, Luray, Virginia.
Shenandoah National Park is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern Virginia. The Park was established in 1935 and contains 193,531 acres. Primary resources of the Park are its outstanding scenery, forests, and animal life, and human history involving generations of mountain people, westward growth, and the War Between the States. Winding near the crest of the mountain range are the Skyline Drive and the Appalachian Trail. During 1966, there were nearly 2 1/2 million visits to the Park. The Park is divided into (three administrative districts 'in which the following wiljderness areas are proposed: *Nj?rrh ,Disttict - derem ys Run, ^,'270 a c r e s , - and Thornton River, 8,210 acres; Central District - Byrd, 20,670 acres; and South District-Big Run, 15,510 acres, Paine Run, 8,160 acres, and Moormans River, 3,120 acres. Total proposed wilderness acreage is slightly over 32% of the Park.
