Mrs. Hazel F. Daly, district manager in Winchester. Mrs. Daly says that in the past some medicare payments fqr doctor bills have been de layed because some simple but important bit of information did not go to the medicare [carrier with the request for j payment.
“To make sure payment will S not have to be delayed while the carrier writes back for missing information," she | said, “we invite beneficiaries to bring their first claim tc the social security office be! fore they send It to the cai rier."
She stressed that the Winchester office will be glad to answer questions about any [claim, but that the first claim an individual beneficiary makes is the one on which he ! is likely to need some help. There are two methods of claiming payments for doctor bills under medicare.
Under one, the doctor bills the patient for whatever part of the $50 deductible has not been paid, plus 20 percent of the rest of the bill. He then claims the remaining 80 per [cent from the medicare carrier. This method can be used only if the doctor agrees to it and also agrees that his total charge will be no more than the reasonable charge determined by the medicare carrier. Under the second method, the patient pays the doctor and requests repayment from the medicare cai [rier. To show the carrier [that the bill has been paid, [the beneficiary either in eludes an itemized receipted i bill from the doctor, or has the doctor show the necessary information on the request for payment form.
“The first time a beneficiary has a claim under this second method,” Mrs. Daly said, “we suggest that he let us review it and make sure it is complete before he sends it to the carrier. Of course, if he prefers, he can send it directly to the carrier.”
“If an older person in the Winchester area wants us to review his request for payment but is unable to come tc the office at 20 S. Cameron St. he may send the claim to us by mail with a telephone num ber, and we will call him if we see any problems,” Mrs. Daly said.
