Richmond, Va... Governor Mills E. Godwin today reminded Virginians of the special significance of Memorial Day, 1967, and urged them to make this a fatalityfree holiday as a tribute to the war dead. Noting that last Memorial Day weekend, a 78hour holiday, saw eight Virginia traffic deaths, the lowest by far ever recorded when the holiday covered three days Governor Godwin said: “Across the Commonwealth on Tuesday, May 30, Virginians will pause to observe, in their own special ways, another memorial day. For many families the observance will be a personal tribute in recognition of sons, brothers, and husbands even now fighting on the fields of Vietnam, fighting that all of us here in Virginia and throughout America may continue to enjoy the freedoms we hold so precious. “No sacrifice can match theirs, no tribute measure up to their worth. But as we travel the highways on this long holiday weekend we can each be mindful of the traffic hazards that can so quickly, so devastatingly, maim and kill. “However else we may commemorate the day, I know of no more significant way in which we might display our respect for our war dead on this Memorial Day than to demonstrate our appreciation for the living by driving carefully.
