Dear Editor:
There must be many people in our county who are concerned that c o nd i t io n s are such that children of irrespons ible parents can be and are deprived of learning how to read and write. Until the incident was brought to light (in Mr. Glaezener’s sermon published in May 11 issue of Rappahannock Newsjconcernthe two children - ages 10 and 14 years - whose combined education amounted to only a year and a few months, many of us had not been too disturbed over the lack of compulsory school attendance. Schools set up as we have thetn just do not take care of all pupils; and this is true, not in Rappahannock alone, but in all school systems. Sometimes it appears to be better for certain pupils to go to work rather than sit in a classroom which has no meaning for them, but here we have an entirely different situation; these children have “dropped out" before they have learned to read and write. There seems to be a real need for the organization of a citizen’ committee for education in Rappahannock, and I am suggesting that the first problem to be studied is our policy of aiding and abetting illiteracy. Public education in Rappahannock is and will be what we, as citizens, want it to be.
