The enormity of the problem is to be seen in the fact that some 112,000 persons lost their lives in the past year in accidents. And, points Out the National Safety Council, that is only part of the story. An additional 11 million, it estimates, suffered injuries at home, on the job and elsewhere that incapacitated them for a day or more. Thus, for every accident that resulted in a fatality, there were nearly 100 others that called for medical attention and restricted activity. The council places the cost of accidents, including lost wages, at $20 billion a year.
