Game Warden Figures now available show what local deer hunters have known and have been saying for the past six weeks - that this past season was not one of the better ones in Rappahannock County. With all checking cards ir from Rappahannock checking stations plus those in Culpeper and Madison, the number of deer taken in Rappahannock stands at 39. There were four bear taken in Rappahannock.
Not since 1957, the last year of a bucks only season in Rappahannock, has this county hac such a low kill. The unofficial total of 28 bucks and 11 doe is way down from last year’s total of 149 deer. McCleary’s Mountain Store at Chester Gap checked 11 deer. Among these was a buck killed by Elias Wines, a doe by Roger Morris and a doe b> Jerry Williams, all of Chester Gap. Ronald McDonald oi Huntly took a doe and Lonnie Williams and Lawrence Chadwell both killed four poini bucks in Fauquier County. Among those checked ai Bradford’s Store in Flint Hill was a doe by Richard Burke of Huntly, a nineepoint buck by Tony Moretz, a four poini buck by Ronald Dodson, Vernon Ramey’s nine point buck, Charles Foster’s eight pointer and a buck by Lynn Atkins. The deer with the greatest number of points taken in the county was that taken by Claton Jett from Riverton, Virginia. - Bradford’s Store also checked an 8 point buck taken ir Fauquier Co. by 13-year-old Skip Chadwell from Newark, Ohio.
