The initial meeting of the new term of the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors was held Friday, January 5 at the courthouse in Washington. All members were present. Lt. Col. Norman Wilbur of Slate Mills, elected to the Board from Hawthorne District in November, was welcomed by fellow members, all of whom were re-elected. In assuming his duties, Mr. Wilbur stated he would endeavor to represent the people of Hawthorne District in the best way possible and would keep the interest of the county foremost in his mind. Reorganization of the Boar< resulted in the election of J. Newbill Miller as chairman and H. B. Wood, vice-chairman. / Resident ^ Engineer Ja mes Skeens ahnounced that the bid on the dual laning of-4.19 miles of Route 211 had been accepted and work was beginning immediately. Completion date for the project is October 1, 1969. In response to a question concerning the erection of guard rails on secondary roads, Mr. Skeens said they were not generally used unless there was a very hazardous situation. Gen. Daniel Noce made a report from the Planning Cpmmission on their visit to a recreational development in Pennsylvania. He gave details of the well planned and promoted development, but stated he could not recommend amending Rappahannock’s present ordinances to allow roads in developments of this kind to be constructed of lower quality than required by the laws.
O. A. Norton, Superintendent of Schools announced a meeting sponsored by the Virginia Association of Counties ! in which School Board off icLaiV and Supervisors would participate fq£a better understanding of mutual problems. He invited any who wished to attend.
In reply to a recent request to the State Department of Police for an additional trooper in Rappahannock, a letter was read stating that at this time there was a personnel shortage and none was available. The purchase of a binder for aerial photo maps in the office of the Commissioner of Revenue was approved. An allocation of $500, included in the year’s budget, was made to the Rappahannock Library.
