Retired farmers often have two things in common, unemployment and latent ability —the latter in the form of a “green thumb" lying idle.
But few persons, with the possible exception of trained landscape engineers, are so qualified and skilled in the art of planting. In an effort to give retired and elderly farmers an opportunity to stay busy, while at the same time making the* most of their skill and knowledge, the Virginia Department of Highways has entered into an agreement with Green Thumb, Inc., a subsidiary of the National Farmers Union. The Department figures to harvest increased highway beauty. Green Thumb, Inc., is primarily financed by the U. S. Office of Economic Opportunity, and the Highway Department participates to the extent of supplying supervision, plants, fertilizer and tools. The Department notes that this “in kind* type of participation will amount to about $10,000 a year for each county in which the program is in effect.
E. W. Turner, highway landscape engineer, indicates there are many benefits which can be derived by the Department from Project Green Thumb, and he lists among them such things as:
