Seriously though, this apple tree population is ANOTHE1R CHANGE taking place in Rap pahannock. In less than 2C years the apple tree population dropped nearly 50%,. Back in 1949 we had a shade under 180 thousand trees;last year there were but 96,088 apple trees in the county! There was a 20.6% drop in total tree numbers in but ? four-year span; 1963-67. Not only is the total tree population declining rapidly; also there is a sharp decline in percentage of total trees that are not of bearing age. In 1956 around 21%, of our total apple tree population was in non-bearing trees as compared to 10% in 1967! Is this good, bad, or indifferent? I’ve always felt apples to be a money maker for the good manager with a good site. Could be we’ll have to put livestock on those hills where apples are now growing and winter them on newspapers!
