Raymond Johnson, Chief; Forest Warden for Rappahan- i nock County announced that the! 4 o’clock burning law will be- j come effective Friday, March' 1, and is in effect until May! 15. This law states that open air fires are unlawful within 300 feet of the woods, or inflammable material leading to woodland, except between 4 o’clock in the afternoon and 12 o’clock midnight. This law is a good forest fire prevention measure because it prohibits burning in dangerous areas during the time of day when a fire burns most rapidly. Since the spring months are generally hazardous, the law is seasonal, applying only during the months forest fire danger is most critical. Forestry personnel ask the cooperation of the public when burning in the open air. By burning during the legal hours the danger of a fire escaping is not as great as earlier in the day. Even when burning after 4 o’clock, thefire should be attended and completely extinguished before leaving. Burn on an afternoon when the wind is calm and the air is moist. This reduces the chance of blowing embers starting a fire in nearby dry grass or woodland. The law will be enforced through the aid of forest fire lookout towers, airplane patrol, and all personnel of the Virginia Division of Forestry.
