Flagrant Violation

of Sales Tax Returns

Failing to file and pay th« Virginia sales tax has resulted in court action by the Virgin ii Department of Taxation against s former Rappahannock businessman. Roy Jenkins, who operated a store and service station at Ben Venue was fined $50 and court costs on each of 12 counts in Rappahannock County Court last week. Jenkins was delinquent in filing and paying sales taxes from December 1966 through and including November 1967, according to Lewis C. Millan of the Department of Taxation.

The fines were suspended provided approximately $1,000 in sales tax and penalties are paid to the tax department and cost paid to the local court by August 30, 1968. Tire Department ol Taxation was directed to advise the court on August 30 if the tax has not been paid.

In attempting to cooperate with Mr. Jenkins, the tax department warned him early in the spring of his offense and in May gave him a 30-day extension to which he failed to respond, said Mr. Millan. Consequently complaints were filed June 21 with a request that the trial be delayed a month. When Mr Jenkins failed to contact the tax department the proceedings in court were completed.
