In both the ’60 and ’64 elections the popular vote margin between the presidential nominees has been around 4% of die total number of votes cast in Virginia. Essentially this means that a small minority can greatly influence the number of electoral votes that a candidate will receive.
U. S. Senate
For the U. S. Senate, two senators are elected from each state, with no respect to districts, for six-year terms and receive an annual salary of $30,000. Harry C. Byrd, jr. and William B. Spong, jr. represent Virginia in the U. S. Senate.
U. S. Congress
Excluding the fact that each state is entitled to one Representative regardless of population, the number of Representatives of each state in Congress is determined by the state’s population. As the population has grown, the number of Representatives has increased but the total membership has been Fixed at 435 since 1912. On basis of the 1960 census there is one congressman for each 410,481 persons. Members of the U. S. House of Representatives are chosen at the November election during odd years for a term of two years and receive a salary of $30,000. According to the “one man, one vote” decision, the Virginia apportionment was re-geared in 1966. John O. Marsh, Jr., who will be challenged by Republican A. R. Giesen, Jr. this fall, represents the 7th district in the U. S. House of Representatives.
