To Plant Pansies
BLACKSBURG-Late July or early August is the time to plant pansies for blooming next spring. They need about two months of good growing weather to develop flower buds before freezing temperatures occur this fall. Plants started now will be ready to produce an abundance of flowers next year.
Pansies are very effective when used as edging for the perennial flower border, or in front of shrubs in the foundation planting. They are particularly attractive j among spring flowering bulbs like I daffodils and tulips. ''"Pansies grow best in cool weather and are quite intolerant of a hot, sunny location. Plant the seeds in a cold frame, or a location which can be shaded from the sun while the seedlings are coming up. Sow the seeds thinly in flats in a finely worked soil. A good procedure is to plant them in shallow furrows which are made by pressing the edge of a small board lightly into the ground. Cover very lightly with sand or screened sphagnum moss, and water carefully with a fine sprinkling nozzle. Germination will occur in about a week or ten days and will be stimulated by covering the flats with burlap or glass to retain moisture.
