Chiggers Likely

ro Be Present

From now until the first frost Jiis fall, anyone wandering into wooded or grassy areas is a good candidate for chiggers. “Whether you are at the beach >r in the woods, picking berries, jlaying golf or at home in uncut pass, chiggers are likely to be jresent,” said J. M. Amos, Virginia Tech entomologist. Amos said the chigger is a mite vhich has six legs and is hatched rom eggs laid by a female during he winter. Chiggers, members of he spider group of animals, must ‘eed on other animals in order to prow. If an animal, including the luman variety, comes along, the nites crawl over the skin in search of a good place to attach hemsleves. They usually find it vhere clothing fits tightly, Amos said. The chiggers then penetrate the issue with the mouthparts, often dong hair follicles or pores of the skin. They inject a substance and suck up liquified tissue. The ‘ceding causes red bumps and evere itching on most people. Once filled with blood, the rhigger drops to the ground and sheds its skin. Thereafter, as a lymph, it is not a parasite but ireys on eggs of small insects bund in decaying substances. \fter molting again, chiggers lecome adults which feed on lymphs and are not harmful to nan. There are a number of substances sold at drug stores and lard ware stores, Amos said, vhich are effective in controlling nites. However, he said, the least expensive is ordinary flowers of ulphur or dusting sulphur, which s no less effective than :ommercial preparations. The ulphur may be sifted into cuffs >f trousers, tops of socks, around he belt or rubbed on the bare kin. It is safe and very effective f used each time chiggers might >e encountered.
