Working on this project at the Beef Cattle Research Station a< Front Royal is Dr. K. P. Bovard At Virginia Tech, the work hat been done by Dr. Bob Carter and Dr. George Green.

Bulls from both the growth and type selection lines were bred to random samples of unrelated commercial cows. The steers were fed high silage rations for 200 days following weaning in October of 1967. The growth lines steers showed less external fat covering and graded about V< grade alive than the type line steers, but graded equal in carcass.

In the same trial, bulls of four inbred lines were compared to those of the growth and type selection lines by breeding them to equivalent groups of cows from the same herd. The steer offspring of one of the inbred lines was almost equal to those ol the growth line bulls in growth rate and were superior in carcass grade. Those by bulls of another inbred line gained one-tenth pound per day slower, but were about equal in carcass grade to the growth line steers. The steer progenies of bulls of the two inbred lines were equal in growth rate to those by the type selection bulls and equal or better in carcass grade. The inbred and selection line bulls were produced at Front Royal in a cooperative beef cattle breeding project begun in 1948 by the Virginia Tech Research Division in cooperation with the Research Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Progeny testing and steer feeding was done at Blacksburg.
