Fuses Stressed
The type of fuse used in the home is very critical in preventing a possible disaster if the wiring system becomes overloaded, said J. L. Calhoun, Virginia Tech Professor of agricultural engineering.
Of basic consideration, he said, is whether the wiring system is protected with ordinary or time-delayed fuses.
The ordinary fuse has a single element that melts when there is a short circuit or overload. The time-delay fuse is similar but has two elements instead of one. One element protects against short circuits and the other against overloads.
“The time-delayed fuse is a good choice for protecting circuits with motor- operated equipment,” Calhoun said, because electric motors require a surge of current to start. The time-delay fuse will handle the starting current of motors but blow if a circuit is overloaded foi a period of time.
Continuing, Calhoun said two kinds of time delay fuses are on the market. One fits a standard fuse socket and the other, called the type S fuse, must be used with an adapter to fit the standard fuse socket. A sharp barb projects from the outside of the adapter. When screwed into the socket, the adapter cannot be removed. The threads inside the adapters differ with the various sizes of type S fuses they are designed to be used with. Thus a 20-ampere type S fuse cannot be used in a 15-ampere adapter because the threads won’t match. This makes the type S fuse tamper-proof.
