Shoplifting Hearing

Merchants in northern Virginia will reveal more facts and figures!: concerning their losses from shoplifting at a public hearing in Arlington on Thursday, Aug. 15. The session will begin at 10 a.m. in the County Board Conferencel: Room on the second floor of the Arlington County Courthouse. (

The Virginia Advisory Legislative Council was directed! by the 1968 Virginia General Assembly to study the increasing problems from shoplifting and make recommendations to the 1970 Assembly.

A 16-member VALC committee is conducting the hearings throughout the state, the, first held in Richmond on Aug. 11. Subsequent hearings, in addition to Arlington, will be announced for Roanoke and Norfolk.

At the first hearing at the State Capitol, merchants and their representatives presented' testimony showing the great increase in cases of shoplifting, with the loss to Virginia businesses estimated at $2 to $5 million for the year 1965.

All interested persons are invited to express their views at the hearings and may reserve time in advance with G. M. Lapsley, secretary of the VALC, State Capitol, Richmond, Va. 23219. Those who have material to present at the hearings are requested to submit 18 copies.

Del. Arthur H. Richardson of Dinwiddie is chairman of the VALC shoplifting committee with Del. E. B. Pendleton of Richmond, vice-chairman. Other committee members include the following: Del. Stanly Bryan of Norfolk; Del. Russell M. Cameal of Williamsburg; John M. Clements and Miss Anne Dobie Peebles, both of Carson.
