Q: My high school counselor told me that my age of liability for military service is 18V4 through 25. Yesterday my neighbor told me that if I accepted a deferment as a student my age of liability would be extended to age 35. Is this true? A: Yes. If you request and are granted a 2-S student deferment your liability is extended to age 35. Q: I have a 2-A classification. How long is my deferment good for? A: Selective Service regulations state that a Class-2 deferment shall be for a period of one year or less. If there is a change in the registrant’s status during the period of deferment in Class 2-A, his classification shall be reopened and considered anew.
Q: I am entering college this fall. What is the minimum number of hours I will have to carry in order to receive a 2-S classification?
A: A student pursuing a four-year course of instruction must have earned 25% of the credits required for his baccalaureate degree at the end of his first academic year, 50% at the end of his second academic year and 75% at the end of his third academic year to qualify for a 2-S deferment. It should be noted, however, that you must make a written request for the deferment by completion of Selective Service System Form 104 (which is available at any local board of the System) or by letter and have your school forward a Selective Service System Form 109, which certifies your status, to your local board
