In October of 1958 Front Royal was converted from “Common Battery” to “Dial” telephone operation. Since that time the operation has grown from 2400 lines and 3600 connectors to 3340 lines and 4700 connectors.
An addition is now in progress adding 720 lines and 1400 terminals to reflect an “equipped” capacity of 4060 lines and 6000 connectors. Completion of the addition in progress will be co-ordinated with out directory issue, October 25, 1968.
The addition is necessary to meet our projected requirements for local services through 1970. The expenditure covering this equipment is in excess of $ 109,800 for various switching equipment to be installed in the central office on the corner of Royal Avenue and 3rd Street.
With the added facilities, 100 terminal per line that provides for 463 rural subscribers will be changed to a terminal per station basis. All of the connectors in the Front Royal exchange with this exception are “Terminal Per Station” and basically unless for rare plant reasons provided the means for assignment of a connector . (station) number to “stay with the subscriber” regardless of where he moves within the Exchange Area. By changing the rural lines now operating terminal per line this same degree of flexibility will be available to our existing terminal per line rural customers.
Regrettably to accomplish this some number changes are necessary initially. These will be co-ordinated with the directory issue and letters are going out to the subscribers affected by the change.
Considerable work has been necessary and will continue on a day by day basis to insure a “clean cutover” on October 25th with as little inconvenience to our customers as possible. This is ■mother progress step to provide telephone subscribers better service and to provide for continued growth in our area.
