“Call the police, call the police,” the young girl was screaming. Upon investigation it was learned that it was not a police matter, but it started me thinking. If one is in need of protection the police are the logical people to call. Their duty is to protect the weak from those who would impose on them. Most of them take their work seriously and carry out their duties in a fair and impartial manner. Why, then, this sudden feeling with the genera] public that police are brutal?
Did you ever examine the word POLICE? The first two letters could stand for PEACE OFFICERS. With some of our present day offenders the last four letters seem applicable, as they think of these public citizens as a form of vermin (plural, singluar, a different pronunciation). For the most part unjustly, I’m sure.
Peace Officer, well I don’t think He was ever addressed as such, but this man was the greatest exponent of peace the world has ever known. He was credited with trying to establish a rule whereby all people could live in peace. He was unpopular with certain elements of His time.
