On Park Drive
Although the color transformation in the forests of Shenandoah National Park was just getting under way during the past weekend, more than 20,000 visits were recorded, according to information received today from Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins.
Best color in the shades of red was to be found in the dogwood, black gum, Virginia creeper, and maple with the yellows dominating the hickory, birch, ash, locust, poplar, and chestnut oak. The sassafras presented a combination of red, yellow, and orange.
Hoskins said most color was confined to vines and isolated trees from various overlooks along Skyline Drive. It was estimated the percentage of color ranged from five percent in the northern section of the Park to ten percent in the central and southern areas.
