Airport. My ticket had been secured by the association and sent to me to fly United to Los Angeles. Mrs. Mary Smith and her daughter Mrs. Thelma Smith with whom I had lived the last three years of my teaching in Fairfax were at Dulles to see me off. Mrs. Mary Smith said, “I wanted to see how you looked.” I don’t know how I looked, but I felt a wee bit frightened, for I had said I never would fly and there I stood waiting for my very first flight. The flight was wonderful! When it was announced we were flying over the Grand Canyon and could actually see, what a thrill for me! I never expected that.

I kept wondering how I would ever find my way in that tremendous airport International in L. A. to get my baggage. It has been said “God looks out for fools and children”. There was a man and his wife from Prince William County who told me to follow them and you can believe they never got out of my sight. I had no trouble.

The International Hotel where the group was meeting for the reception, dinner and night, sends its car for the people staying at that hotel, also sends their people to the plane on departure.

When I was taken to my hotel room I found my tour mate had already arrived, one of three ladies from Missouri.

On the rooming of Sept. 5 the group of 41 plus the young male tour guide left L. A. by United Airlines for Honolulu. Here we were taken by a “Wiki wiki” (hurry, hurry) bus to be transferred to a Hawaiian jet for the island of Maui. We had two nights at Maui Palms Hotel right on the ocean and near a town also. We had bus tours from there. Our drivers were Hawaiians. One tour took us to Lahania, the historic old whaling center and former Royal Capital of the Hawaiian Islands.

From Lahania we drove to Iao Valley where we enjoyed a Teriyahi Steak Fry and then visited the Iao Valley Gorge. Such mountains on both sides - beautiful and outstanding was Needle Point .Mt. At the fry we were introduced to Hawaiian pineapple! What luscious eating! One cannot describe it to anyone who has never eaten it in Hawaii. Each night we were entertained by Hawaiian music and dancing. The last night there, little children performed perfect rhythm and timing. All of us were just astounded at such perfection. I am hoping for a picture of one little girl when my films are developed.

On Skt., Sept.' 7 we departed by plane for Hilo, the Orchid Island. Here we went to a typical Hawaiian Hotel. It was run completely by an Hawaiian family. The children all work and they had just sent two away to college. They just did everything they could to make our stay pleasant. There was the only place we had a downpour of rain and had it until Sunday morning. However, we toured the Orchid Garden there and learned of so many different kinds. We had little orchids on every turn, on the dishes or trays, on our pillows 1 at night and some of us had them as corsages.
